I have to say that one thing I liked about your post is you never claimed to an expert in speeding reading. Your advice is based on what you’ve done and learned. For these two points, I find your blog very helpful.

Thank you for sharing your thoughts and external links with us. This will be most helpful for me since I’m a book reviewer and if I want to get paid as such I need to read more as to keep up with the demands I’m hoping to encounter soon.

Thank you for sharing.

Heres another one: make a written note of the important keys you learned.

Why do this?

Answer:

1) It cements them into you stronger. An anchoring process.

And

2) Makes digging them out of memory easier when you need to.

Everyone will have different keys.

Because whats important to one …might not make it for another.

For instance: now and then, my eyes see words not real on the paper. Just in my mind.

And often opens more interesting thought.

So much so, when I go back to verify the thought, I see the real word.

Then I have two keys:

My key – I call: M-key.

And the authors key – named: A-key.

Both of which makes my reading investment portfolio more important for ME.

To jot down for later use.

Hi, J:
Reading is fun. How many books have you read so far this year? The end of the year is approaching and 135 books have been read here. I’d like to hear where you are, in your reading! =) Talk to ya soon!

And I do the same thing, sometimes, without realizing it. If a book has been through years of writing, editing, creation, and publishing, there MUST be something redemptive about it, right?

Unfortunately, it’s sometimes apparent that in fact, no, there’s not ALWAYS something redemptive about some books–some are simply terrible.

Now THAT is negative!

I try not to give up on a book, after all it was published because someone liked it, and just search for what makes it worthy to be called a book. I know that sounds negative, but at least I’m giving the writer a shot. Along the way, I learn from other’s mistakes and their successes. I keep a journal that helps me concentrate on what I’m reading and more importantly, remember. Because theirs books I’ve read, I couldn’t tell you the name of the characters. Lol. And sometimes they all run together, so the journal helps separate them for me.

LOVE it. This is a huge thing for me–with the exception of some fiction (which I like to read as a relaxation tool), it’s always helped me to stay focused on what I’m reading. I’m a big proponent of writing down anything and everything (I keep a chock-full Evernote account with random stuff in it).

I’ve never heard of that tool, but it sounds both helpful and extremely aggravating–ha! Definitely useful, I’m sure.

Thanks for stopping by again; take care!
Nick

They explained that studies had shown the number one thing slowing down our reading is re-reading. We often read a phrase, line, sentence, even paragraph more than once. Sometimes up to six times.

The main cause of this is that we are not paying attention to what we read. Our mind wanders onto something else, but our eyes keep moving until we realize we missed something and go back. So the first step is to put other things out of our mind – go take care of them if you have to, write them down if you’re worried about forgetting, whatever it takes. Force your mind to focus only on what you are reading. If you can’t stay focused, leave the reading to a time when you can.

The neat tool I mentioned was a projector that moved through text on the screen at a steady pace, several words to one line at a time, with no going back. At the end we had to do a comprehension test. This forced us to learn to pay attention the first time, because re-reading is impossible. That really helped me break the re-reading habit.

I have been using Amazon.com, but they take such a huge cut, that it’s hard to sell and make more than a few pennies.

My goal is 50 per year, but I would love to bump that up to 1000, since at only 50 per year, I will never in my entire life read through the books I already own.
